Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has allowed midfielder Fran Merida to move to Atletico Madrid on a free transfer. The 20-year-old Spaniard penned a four-year deal when he joined the Gunners from Barcelona in 2006 but has failed to live up his early promise. He made only six appearances from the substitute's bench for Wenger's team in the Premier League, scoring in the 2-0 win at Bolton Wanderers in January. Merida did start seven games in the Carling and FA Cups and the Champions League, scoring a superb goal in the 2-1 Carling Cup win over Liverpool in October. Wenger allowed Merida to spend the second half of the 2007-08 campaign on loan with Real Sociedad where he found the net once in 14 appearances.
