Wenger hits out at negativity
15 May 2009 - 08:41:36
Arsene Wenger has called on Arsenal fans to support his side after hitting out at the negativity which sometimes surrounds the Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners are poised to finish a fourth consecutive season without silverware and Wenger's philosophy of nurturing young talent has come under the spotlight.
Many supporters have called for Wenger to supplement his squad with a few experienced heads, but the Frenchman insists that now more than ever is the time to get behind the players.
"There is a massive difference between the away fans, who are absolutely fantastic, and the home ones," he said, referring to the Champions League semi-final second leg defeat to Manchester United at the Emirates.
"It is always that negative way of thinking, that the players do not care.
"If we do not get there (to win a trophy) next year then I am responsible and will stand up for it.
"But what this team needs is people who are fans of the club."
Meanwhile, Wenger has rubbished reports that Emmanuel Adebayor could join Chelsea in a £25million summer transfer.
He added: "Adebayor is part of our plans for the future.
"I believe he has been disturbed at the start of the season a little bit, by bad feelings from the fans because he was close to leaving."
