Wenger happy to turn to youth
09 Dec 2009 - 07:53:11
Arsene Wenger is confident that the youthful Arsenal squad he has named for Wednesday's Champions League encounter with Olympiacos will do the club proud.
The Gunners have made the trip to Greece for their final group stage game already assured of their place in the last 16 and with ten teenagers in an experimental 18-man squad.
The likes of Jack Wilshere, Craig Eastmond and Fran Merida have all made the trip with Wenger keen to rest some of his big-guns ahead of the weekend Premier League meeting with Liverpool.
But despite suggestions that his selection is a gamble, Wenger claims the players he has selected are good enough to rise to the occasion.
"I believe that we want to get through the group unbeaten. We want to win always. When you represent Arsenal Football Club there is only one way to do that and that is to win every game you play," he explained.
"It is a risk because you know if you don't win the game you will be criticised but I trust these players to do well.
"They have a lot of experience already of the big games and it will be another experience for them to show how good they are.
"It will give them a little belief and confidence and we will see some players we have never seen at that level and that is as well for me a good opportunity to judge how good these players are."
