Wenger hails Gunners display
26 Nov 2008 - 07:55:16
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was delighted to see his side end a difficult few days with a 1-0 Champions League victory at home to Dynamo Kyiv.
A late Nicklas Bendtner goal at the Emirates Stadium ensured that the Gunners qualified for the knockout stages of the competition, as Wenger's side ended a turbulent week on a positive note.
The Frenchman said: "This is the first step for us. It was what the team needs, reassurance, and this will give us that.
"We left it late. It was more a steady than spectacular performance, but it was important to win the game."
Meanwhile, Wenger was pleased with the performance of former skipper William Gallas, who was axed as captain late last week after publicly criticising some of his team-mates.
"I believe his focus was great," Wenger added. "He wanted to do well and you could see he was completely committed in the game.
"Overall, I feel he did well and the crowd responded well. Somewhere, they acknowledge that he was a committed captain and I was very happy that the crowd reacted in this way to him."
