Wenger doubts Robin's return

Arsenal forward Robin van Persie is set to miss the rest of the season as he struggles to overcome a foot injury.

The 23-year-old Netherlands international has been sidelined since mid-January by a broken metatarsal, with Gunners boss Arsene Wenger fearful that the forward will not feature again this term.

He told the club's official website: "The end of April now looks optimistic. It is likely he will be out for the season.

"We have spoken to the doctors and they told us the longer you keep this kind of fracture without playing, the less chance you have of a recurrence.

"So, if he can play only one or two games then we will not take a gamble."

Wenger is already shorn of the services of captain Thierry Henry for the remainder of the season as Arsenal seek to ensure a top-four finish in the Premiership.
