Wenger denies defender talk
17 Jun 2008 - 09:50:28
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has no plans to strengthen his defensive options in the summer transfer market.
Wenger has revealed he has no intention of renewing his interest in Hamburg's Vincent Kompany or indeed any other defender as he is happy with the players he currently has at the Emirates Stadium.
Wenger had been expected to add to his defence in the close season after losing regular first-choice centre-backs Kolo Toure and William Gallas at times during the last campaign.
However, 22-year-old Belgium defender Kompany will not be joining the Gunners this summer.
"I have been interested in Vincent Kompany ever since he was 16, but I am not interested in him this year," Wenger told The Sun.
"There is nobody I need for my team's defensive department.
"I still follow Kompany's progress all the time and I know him very, very well, but he will not be an Arsenal player next season.
"I know all the good Belgian players. Arsenal are following a number of them with great interest, although I won't name names."
