Wenger delight at response
28 Aug 2008 - 07:39:23
Arsene Wenger believes Arsenal have provided a response to their doubters after brushing FC Twente aside to book their place in the group stages of the Champions League.
The Gunners had come under fire after beginning the new Premier League season in unconvincing fashion.
However, they bounced back from Saturday's surprise defeat at Fulham by coasting to a 4-0 third qualifying round second leg success over the Dutch side to book their place in Thursday's draw by a 6-0 aggregate scoreline.
"We want to play with the best and to do that we had to qualify for the group stage. It was a big mental test," admitted Wenger.
"The response (from the weekend) was clear - togetherness, focus and efficiency.
"The whole team was sharper and physically much better than on Saturday and that is why it made it easier."
Meanwhile, Wenger singled out Theo Walcott for praise after he capped a fine all-round performance with a second-half goal in front of watching England coach Fabio Capello.
"I have always said we have to be patient with him," he added.
"I felt he can be decisive in any game against anybody if we can get him in.
"He has improved his first touch and his link-up play, which was vital for his progression.
"But the way he finished his goal, you cannot teach that. He has that naturally."
