Wenger cool on major moves
30 Jul 2009 - 13:24:17
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has played down the prospects of him making major moves into the transfer market, despite losing both Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Adebayor to Manchester City.
Ajax defender Thomas Vermaelen is the only new arrival among the Gunners squad, with Wenger maintaining his policy of trusting in the players he already has at his disposal.
He told the club's official website: "I feel we are strong enough, but if we can add then we will do it.
"In England people think that all the problems can be sorted out by buying players.
"I believe the biggest target is to work hard in training, improve what we can improve and have confidence in the players that we have.
"If we need to add then we will. We have money available, so for us it is now important to spend it in the right way when we do it, or if we do it."
Meanwhile, midfielder Tomas Rosicky has played down the seriousness of the injury setback which has seen him miss several of the Gunners' pre-season games.
The 28-year-old has been sidelined for 18 months, but is confident that he will be at full fitness in the near future.
He added: "I have a feeling that I am finally getting back to my usual standard of football.
"During the injury struggle I began preparing many times, but it took a long time to get this far. I am fit, which is the most important thing now."
