Wenger confident of progress
08 Apr 2009 - 07:25:49
Arsene Wenger is confident Arsenal can progress in the Champions League after securing a 1-1 away draw in the first leg of their quarter-final tie against Villarreal.
The Gunners fell behind to Marcos Senna's 30-yard strike in the early stages in Spain before grabbing a vital away-goal equaliser courtesy of a stunning overhead kick from Emmanuel Adebayor.
"Villarreal started stronger and put us in a difficult position but it was a great response," said Wenger.
"We took over in the second half and it puts us in a great position. We want to qualify at home and repeat the performance from the second half.
"I am confident because of the quality we have shown added to the mental strength and desire we have shown.
"This team has shown the whole season they are mentally very strong and when they have backs to the wall, these young players always find an answer.
"I believe we have created momentum. We are a very young team, but are able to focus.
"We have shown with the consistency we have in the Premier League that we are able to concentrate every three days and at that age, that is a big quality."
Speaking about Adebayor's eye-catching goal, the Frenchman added: "It was a great goal, as well as a great game.
"At the start his body was a bit in the wrong position to score, but he managed to turn that into an advantage for him.
"After, we had many dangerous situations where we could have scored a second goal."
