Wenger buoyed by Gunners
20 Oct 2009 - 08:02:59
Arsene Wenger has told his Arsenal side that it is time they delivered success to a club starved of silverware in recent seasons.
The Gunners have played second fiddle to the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea since winning the 2005 FA Cup Final.
Wenger has spent the ensuing period calling for patience as his young side matures.
But following their strong start to the new season, the Frenchman has suggested that the time for waiting might just be over.
Speaking ahead of Tuesday's Champions League clash with AZ Alkmaar, he declared: "I believe this team has a big future. We have improved the belief and results.
"However, we know we have not won anything yet, it is all in front of us and that is what we want to show this season."
Meanwhile, Wenger has played down suggestions that Theo Walcott's career could be overshadowed by injury problems.
The England forward has not travelled to Holland for the European tie after being sidelined for four weeks with knee ligament damage picked up in the weekend victory over Birmingham City.
Walcott was only two games into his return from a long-term back injury.
"Theo is a young boy," added Wenger. "Sometimes you go through a period like that when you are at that age, where you are injured more.
"Your body settles and adapts. When you get over that, usually you have no problem anymore."
