Wenger blames cheap goals
19 Apr 2009 - 07:23:48
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger blamed cheap goals for his side's 2-1 FA Cup semi-final defeat at the hands of Chelsea.
The Gunners led Saturday's encounter at Wembley courtesy of Theo Walcott's first-half opener.
However, goals from Florent Malouda and Didier Drogba ensured it was the Blues and not them who will be playing in next month's showpiece.
Wenger was unable to call on several injured first-team players - including goalkeeper Manuel Almunia and defenders William Gallas, Bacary Sagna and Gael Clichy - and afterwards he blamed lapses for the costly goals.
"It was a game where any mistake in the end could be costly," said the Frenchman.
"It is disappointing because we had a good start and after we dropped off.
"The game looked as through it would finish as a draw. I felt we gave two cheap goals away."
Meanwhile, Wenger leapt to the defence of young goalkeeper Lukazs Fabianski after the Pole was blamed for both of Chelsea's goals.
"I feel sorry for him because he is a great goalkeeper," he continued. "But we have to take that on board."
