Wenger: New signing unlikely

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted that he is unlikely to sign any new players before the January transfer window closes on Monday.

The Gunners boss had been chasing Fulham defender Chris Smalling, who has opted to join Manchester United instead, and had also been expected to bring a new striker to the Emirates Stadium.

However, as Nicklas Bendtner and Theo Walcott are now returning to full fitness, Wenger looks set to stick with what he has got for the remaining four months of the season.

He said: "Manchester United got Smalling in the end. I am sorry because we were very close to getting him and we were on the case very early.

"I wish the player well. At the end of the day it is important he has a good career. In both clubs he has a good chance to make a great career. The most important thing is he does that.

"It is not impossible (to sign a player before the transfer window shuts), but at the moment it is unlikely."
