Wenger: I never speak to refs

Last weekend Sir Alex Ferguson apologised for a verbal assault on Alan Wiley in which he said the 49-year-old was "unfit" following his side's 2-2 home draw with Sunderland. The United manager has complied with the Football Association's request for his observations on the controversial post-match opinion of the referee. Prior to Ferguson's comments on Wiley, Manchester City manager Mark Hughes was critical of the amount of stoppage time played during the derby at Old Trafford, which United won with a dramatic late strike by Michael Owen. Wenger is no stranger to controversy on the touchline. Earlier this season the French coach was sent to the stands for kicking a water bottle in frustration following defeat at United - an incident he subsequently received an apology for from referees' chief Keith Hackett. The Arsenal manager, though, maintains all sides have a responsibility to behave in an appropriate manner. "I have no relationship with the referee. I never speak to any referee," said Wenger. "I believe that the referees have to keep their distance with the players as well. "Personally I respect the referees and I think the referees have to keep their distances from the managers and the players." Wenger, though, accepts there has to be censure for those who overstep the mark. "You know we are sometimes too excessive after the games," said Wenger. "What we want is for everybody to be treated exactly the same so there is only one rule in the Premier League. "When the managers do not respect the code of conduct, this rule has to be applied to everybody and I don't think even Ferguson would want to be treated differently."
