Wenger hoping to continue run

Arsene Wenger insists Arsenal's weekend clash against Blackburn is all about the points, not a walk down memory lane. Wenger became the Gunners' longest-serving manager this week when he celebrated 13 years in charge of the North Londoners. The Frenchman began his Arsenal tenure against Blackburn, the same opponents they tackle at Emirates Stadium on Sunday. Wenger is not getting sentimental about the visit of Rovers, stating beating the Ewood Park outfit is simply a chance to maintain their good form. First experience "It was quite funny because it was my first experience," he said on Sky Sports News. "It's a good opportunity that started well at Blackburn. "Sunday is a good opportunity to continue our good run, to come back in the league because we have a game in hand. "We have played away four times at difficult places and are in a strong position, so let's take advantage of that. "That is all much more important than history." Arsenal had an all-English defence for Wenger's first game in charge against Blackburn in October 1996, a far cry from his current multi-national squad. Lee Dixon, Tony Adams, Nigel Winterburn and Steve Bould protected David Seaman in goal, but Wenger insists football has evolved. "It's difficult to compare (the teams). You can never compare," he continued. "If you look at the individual qualities of the players it was outstanding. "Today it's different. The spine of the team was made up of English players, now we have a more international team. "That's the way football has evolved over the past 10 years." Recent form Wenger, who has confirmed Theo Walcott and Nicklas Bendtner are available for the visit of Blackburn, he has been pleased with his side's recent form. Although the Gunners lost to Manchester United and Manchester City, they have responded well by winning five consecutive matches in all competitions. "Our overall performance in the games has been quite good, very promising," he added. "Even when we had little disappointment in two games, the quality of the performance was still there. "We did transform that disappointment into more desire and came back every time. "I believe the spirit is there, the quality is there and we know it is a very big and important season for us. "I am confident we will do well."
