We can't compete with 'Wayne Rooney' wages says Arsene Wenger

Arsenal will not be following the Manchester clubs in paying £200,000-a-week wages 'in the next year or two', according to Arsene Wenger, who still warned his club they will soon need to find the resources to start forking out if they are to stay competitive.[LNB]The Arsenal manager is often seen as too careful with money and admits he could not have competed for Wayne Rooney's signature.[LNB] Up in arms: Wenger admits his side can not match the likes of the Manchester clubs for big wages[LNB]But with Rooney emulating the highest earners across town at Manchester City, who host Arsenal today, Wenger accepts he needs to find resources for higher wages.[LNB]He said: 'If you ask, Can the club afford it with the actual balance sheet?' then the answer is No.[LNB]'But if it is the market price and if you have the resources available and if you can balance other accounts then, yes, you pay - because it is that or disappear.[LNB]'When I arrived in this country, players were on £200,000 a year. Only 15 years later, it is that per week, a bit of a shock for me.[LNB]'But it doesn't shock anybody when an actor turns up half asleep at 11 in the morning and takes that money.[LNB]What about the people who take billions of pounds from petrol and have done nothing special in their life?
