31 March 2010 11:55
There was that familiar sinking in the pit of my stomach as Wayne Rooney was helped from the pitch in Munich on Tuesday night. We've seen this before, England's great hope, struck down on the eve of a major tournament. [LNB]Manchester United's season may or may not rest on the healing capabilities of the striker's ankle but we're certain that Fabio Capello will need a fully fit Rooney to prosper in South Africa. [LNB]But the news that England's great hope has been here before isn'tnecessarily a good thing - Sportsmail takes a trip to the doctors tolook at Rooney's injury-stricken career to date. [LNB]Two goals in the Euro 2004 Group B clashes withSwitzerland and Croatia had sent Rooney-mania into the stratosphere. But that was as good as it got for Rooney as the Three Lions'tournament ended at the quarter-finals. [LNB] In the 27th minute of the clash with Portugal, Rooney limped off aftera seemingly innocuous challenge by Jorge Andrade. However, the18-year-old had broken a metatarsal in his right foot, he departed andEngland did later that evening on penalties.[LNB] Anguish: Wayne Rooney had announced himself to the world at Euro 2004 but his tournament was cut short by an injury to his metatarsal[LNB]Metatarsal Misery II (April 2006)A bad day at the office for Rooney as United all but surrendered the title to Chelsea and the striker limped off the field with a serious injury. [LNB]Rooney had fractured a the base of his fourth metatarsal in his right foot after colliding with Paulo Ferreira and his inclusion in the squad for the World Cup in Germany was put into serious doubt.  The nation held it's breath and hoped. [LNB]Two days before the final England squad was to be announced, Rooney returned home from England's training camp in Germany for a scan which revealed his foot had healed. [LNB]He missed England's first group game, made an appearance as sub against Trinidad and Tobago but his tournament ended in tears after he was sent off for stamping on Ricardo Carvalho in the quarter-final. [LNB] Curse: Rooney is struck down in the final of the month of the 2005/06 season and goes to the World Cup only half-fit[LNB]GAMES HE COULD MISS One weekApril 3 - Chelsea (h) Premier League[LNB]Two weeksApril 7 - Bayern (h) Champions LeagueApril 11 - Blackburn (a) Premier League[LNB]Three weeksApril 17 - Man City (a) Premier League[LNB]Four weeksApril 21 - Champions League QF (h)April 24 - Tottenham (h) Premier LeagueApril 27 - Champions League QF (a)[LNB]Five weeksMay 1 - Sunderland (a) Premier League[LNB]Six weeksMay 9 - Stoke (h) Premier League[LNB]Eight weeksMay 22 - Champions League finalMay 24 - England v Mexico (Wembley)[LNB]Nine weeksMay 30 - England v Japan (Graz)[LNB]Ten weeksJune 2 - Departure for South Africa[LNB]11 weeksJune 12 - England v USA (Rustenburg) [LNB]Metatarsal Misery III (August 2007)Rooney fractured his left metatarsal in United's goalless draw against Reading on the opening day of the Premier League. [LNB]Ankle Agony (March 2010)The injury in the clash with Bayern occurred in the build-up to the German's winner, an innocuous looking twist of the ankle had Rooney reeling.
