Walcott nets in Arsenal victory
28 Aug 2010 - 15:25:19
Theo Walcott caught the eye of watching England boss Fabio Capello after scoring the first goal in Arsenal's 2-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.
Walcott, who was recalled by Capello to face Hungary in a friendly earlier this month after being snubbed for the World Cup, again stood out in front of Capello.
He followed up his hat-trick in the 6-0 rout of Blackpool last week with a 20th minute opener.
Robin van Persie played in the flying winger and he found the bottom corner of the net after firing a low shot towards the far post.
Walcott now seems certain to be part of the England squad named by Capello on Sunday evening for the forthcoming Euro 2012 double-header against Bulgaria and Switzerland.
Blackburn were level seven minutes later when on-loan Manchester United striker Mame Biram Diouf turned home El-Hadji Diouf's cross.
But the Gunners were not to be denied their first away victory of the fledgling season as Andrey Arshavin crashed home a 51st minute winner after Cesc Fabregas' shot had deflected into the Russian's path.
The only sour note for Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was the departure of striker Robin van Persie in the first half with a possible ankle injury.
The Netherlands international was making his first start of the new Premier League season.
