Walcott: Arsenal are ready to finally end their trophy drought this season

Theo Walcott is convinced that Arsenal will end their four-year trophy drought this season because the squad has gained the experience necessary to deliver silverware. The Gunners have failed to land a major trophy since lifting the FA Cup in 2005 but Walcott signed a new long-term deal at the Emirates this summer because he is confident they will end their barren run this year. Fellow first-team stars Robin van Persie, Nicklas Bendtner and Denilson also agreed contract extensions in the summer and Walcott believes the unity in the dressing room has led the club to the brink of glory. 'We have gained a lot of experience over the last few years and although we haven't won any trophies, I think that will change this year,' said the England winger, who is expected to return from a back injury against Blackburn on Sunday. 'If you want to win trophies, it is important to keep the group together - Manchester United are a good example of that. 'This summer, Robin, Nicklas, Kieran [Gibbs] and a few others signed new contracts and I firmly believe we can win things here. I signed because I have got a lot of belief in the club and in the team.' Walcott believes that the addition of Thomas Vermaelen represents another significant boost to the club's hopes of lifting a major trophy. Vermaelen has scored four goals this season and Walcott insists that the defeneder's aerial prowess makes him a match for the Premier League's leading target men. 'We've added to the squad with Thomas Vermaelen and for me he is a top lad. He's our top scorer too. 'He has settled in really well and he's such a nice guy. I have trained with him a few times now and he's a very tough competitor. 'He has got an absolutely great leap on him too - he will win a header against anyone. I reckon he would beat Peter Crouch in the air.'
