Vermaelen appeal dismissed by FA

The Football Association has dismissed Arsenal's appeal against defender Thomas Vermaelen's red card in the 2-0 win over West Ham on Saturday.The 24-year-old was sent off for a foul on Guillermo Franco that referee Martin Atkinson ruled denied the West Ham striker a goal scoring opportunity. The Belgian defender will be suspended for Saturday's trip to Birmingham as the Gunners continue their title push. Vermaelen has scored seven league goals following a £10m summer move from Ajax.
