The Football Association has dismissed Arsenal's appeal against defender Thomas Vermaelen's red card in the 2-0 win over West Ham on Saturday. The 24-year-old was sent off for a foul on Guillermo Franco that referee Martin Atkinson ruled denied the West Ham striker a goal scoring opportunity.

The Belgian defender will be suspended for Saturday's trip to Birmingham as the Gunners continue their title push.

Vermaelen has scored seven league goals following a £10m summer move from Ajax.

His absence, along with centre-back partner William Gallas through what manager Arsene Wenger describes as an "endless calf injury" is sure to test the Gunners' strength in depth as they approach a crucial period in the club's season.

I would hope Wenger slots Song in there for Saturday as I wouldn't be confident in Campbell and Silvestre playing together SonOfGunnersaurus Veteran defender Sol Campbell, 35, has been deputising for Frenchman Gallas, while Mikael Silvestre could be called in to cover for Vermaelen.

Arsenal have won their previous six Premier League games and were top of the Premier League following Saturday's win over West Ham.

Manchester United's 2-1 win over Liverpool on Sunday took them back to the summit, two points clear of the Gunners.
