UEFA case against Eduardo a "witch hunt," says Wenger

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger accused UEFA Friday of mounting a "witch hunt" against his striker Eduardo da Silva and said the decision to open a disciplinary case against him was a "disgrace." Eduardo was awarded a penalty in the first half of Arsenal's Champions League playoff second leg against Celtic this week -- a match the English side won 3-1 for a 5-1 aggregate win -- after going down under challenge from goalkeeper Artur Boruc. UEFA said Friday it was opening disciplinary proceedings against the Brazilian-born Croatian international for "deceiving the referee" in the incident. That provoked an angry response from Wenger. "I find it a complete disgrace," the Frenchman said at a news conference Friday when asked about the UEFA charge. "There is nothing conclusive (in the pictures). It singles out a player in Europe to be a cheat and that is not acceptable." He added: "For me it's a witch hunt. It is not an objective judgement of the case. Eduardo was touched by the goalkeeper and we can prove that." (Editing by Justin Palmer)
