THE LIST: Sportsmail's 50 memorable moments of the English football season
Published : 10 May 2010 14:38:57

HAVE YOUR SAY... What will be your abiding memory of this season? Sportsmail are remembering the top 50 moments of the English football season for the latest edition of The List. But what will be your abiding memory? The madness at Notts County? Fulham's heroics? Or how about Jermaine Beckford seeing off Manchester United in the FA Cup? TELL US WHAT YOU THINK It's that time of year again when football fans up and down the country can sit back, take a breather before the World Cup and reflect on another action-packed season. The campaign got off to a flyer last August as a rampant Arsenal side hammered Everton while Norwich looked nothing like potential League One champions as they crumbled 7-1 at home to Colchester on the opening day. Performances on the pitch amazed and disgusted us in equal measure, while some of the behaviour off the field left us shaking our heads in disbelief. The latest edition of The List outlines Sportsmail's magic moments of the past 10 months and we'll count them down every day this week before revealing the top 10 on Friday. It's all in here - from the big, big stories at little Notts County to the success/failure of English clubs on the continent. And, as always, if you think we've missed anything out, make sure you let us know. Enjoy... 40. Chris Kamara's 'commentary'The host Jeff Stelling summed it up perfectly when he described Kamara's update from the Portsmouth versus Blackburn as 'cutting edge reporting.' Obviously Stelling's comment was purely tongue in cheek. Kamara had missed Anthony Van Den Borre being sent off during the match in April and when Stelling asked for an update the former Swindon and, Brentford and Luton star could only shrug his shoulders. Cynics would say the gaffe was timed nicely to coincide with the release with Kamara's autobiography but we're not sure - you can't get things that badly wrong, even if you tried. 39. Roman Pavlyuchenko goes on stunning scoring run to defy Harry RedknappTo say that Pavlyuchenko had a slow start to the season would be an understatement. By February, he had only found the net twice - both in cup games. And the Russia striker's boss was made it clear his work-rate wasn't up to scratch. Redknapp said: 'I expect him to run around, work hard for the team. If he does that, he's got terrific ability.' Pav was spurred into action, embarking on a scoring spree that invigorated Tottenham Champions League chase and his career at the club. He bagged six goals in four games in January and February - including vital strikes against Leeds, Wigan Bolton and Everton. Power of Roman: Pavlyuchenko scored six goals in four games at the start of the year to prove Spurs manager Harry Redknapp wrong not to believe the Russian 38. West Ham's fight to stay upIt has been a season to forget for the Hammers. They posted their lowest points total in the Premier League, won just once on the road and suffered the kind of boardroom and financial trauma which usually accompanies relegation. And the future of boss Gianfranco Zola remains anything but decided. But a series of results, late in the season, eased the pressure on the club. Back-to-back home victories over Sunderland and Wigan in April steered the club clear of the drop. And the players' celebrations with Zola proved just how highly they regard the Italian. Hammers' delight: Gianfranco Zola celebrates with his players after vital victory 37. Liverpool and Fulham's European bus journeysFirst it was the Icelandic banks causing havoc to the UK's banking system and this season their volcanoes brought the country to a stand still. Liverpool and Fulham had the unenviable task of taking trains and buses instead of routine short flights to their games in Madrid and Hamburg after Eyjafjallajokull volcano spewed out a cloud of ash which closed many of Europe's major airports. Liverpool travelled by train to London, took the Eurostar to Paris and then a TGV train to Bordeaux, finishing their journey with a fight across the Pyrenees to Madrid. Fulham's journey was a 12-hour slog by coach to Hamburg - a 1,200 mile round trip which was only broken up by severe traffic delays which allowed to players to disembark to stretch their legs. Travel nightmare: Liverpool's Steven Gerrard boards a train at Runcorn Station 36. Hartlepool docked three points Gary Liddle played in the 'Pool's 2-0 victory over Brighton in April when he should have been sat in the stands. He had picked up 10 bookings and therefore was supposed to seeing out a suspension. Liddle's appearance cost Hartlepool a suspended £10,000 fine and a three point deduction just days before the last game of the season which very nearly cot them their League One lives. Travel nightmare: Liverpool's Steven Gerrard boards a train at Runcorn Station 35. Hooliganism mars West Ham-MillwallThe ugly side of football reared its head on the streets of the East End in August as two sets of fans with a history of violence brought us scenes we thought had been confined to the history books. The troubled flared early - rival groups clashed throughout the day - culminating in bloody battles around Upton Park as kick-off approached. And there was worse to come inside the ground as a number of pitch invasions led to further trouble. Unfortunately, it wasn't an isolated incident this season. Hooligans marred the end of season matches at Luton and Sheffield Wednesday, too. Bloody battle: A fan is led away by police after trouble broke out between West Ham United supporters and Milwall fans during the Carling Cup clash in August The best of the rest of The ListSportsmail's top 50 players to have never won the titleSportsmail's top 50 signings of the seasonSportsmail's top 50 most entertaining teams in historySportsmail's top 50 of golf's major miraclesSportsmail's top 50 National Hunt HorsesSportsmail's top 50 Premier League players of the decadeSportsmail's top 50 last-gasp goals in British footballSportsmail's top 50 footballers never to play at the World CupSportsmail's top 50 sporting feuds of all timeSportsmail's 50 great sports photographsSportsmail's top 50 commentators of all timeSportsmail's top 50 sporting venuesSportsmail's top 50 performers of the season so farSportsmail's top 50 all-time managers in BritainSportsmail's top 50 goal poachersSportsmail's top 50 footballing traitorsSportsmail's top 50 FA Cup heroesSportsmail's greatest Wembley finals in historySportsmail's top 50 biggest hitters in cricketSportsmail's top 50 British & Irish LionsSportsmail's top 50 Ashes heroesSportsmail's top 50 players of the Premier League season
