Team of the week 07/02/12

Published: 07 Feb 2012 - 16:58:14

The Premier League returned to weekend action just days after the closure of the January transfer window.

Among the weekends fixtures, Chelsea entertained Manchester United, Arsenal faced struggling Blackburn and Tottenham were away at Liverpool.

Here is the Football.co.uk Premier League team of the week.

Position : Goalkeeper
Wayne Hennessey (Wolves)
The Welsh keeper has made his share of mistakes for struggling Wolves this season, but his performance on Saturday against QPR was a sign of what he is capable of. A series of fine stops including a superb save from Adel Taarabt was enough to ensure Wolves walked away with all three points.

Position: Defender
Kyle Walker (Tottenham)
England's potential right-back for Euro 2012 was up against England's right-back at the 2010 World Cup, Glen Johnson. The Spurs defender managed to outshine Johnson and prove a point as to why he should be first choice for his country. An exciting attacking display combined with a solid showing at the back certainly did Walker no harm.

Position: Defender
Mike Williamson (Newcastle)
Newcastle continue to plug away and pick up points. The solid centre-back pairing of Coloccini and Taylor was split up following Taylor's injury a couple of months ago, but his replacement Mike Williamson has so far proved to be a valuable replacement. His performance on Sunday was key in Newcastle's 2-1 win over Aston Villa.

Position: Defender
Roger Johnson (Wolves)
Since he joined Wolves in the summer and instantly took over as club captain, Roger Johnson has perhaps not been the most popular figure at Molineaux. The former Birmingham defender was an expensive acquisition for Wolves and has finally started to show his promise. A superb display at the back in the win over QPR was just what he and his side needed.

Position: Defender
Neil Taylor (Swansea)
Swansea were desperate to keep hold of the Welsh international left-back in the summer and it is easy to see why. The 22 year-old has started life in the Premier League with some very promising performances for the Swans and was once again in good form against West Brom on Saturday.

Position: Midfielder
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal)
Having controversially taken him off against Manchester United, Arsene Wenger gave the youngster another chance at home to Blackburn. Oxlade-Chamberlain took his chance well and scored twice for the Gunners in the 7-1 victory. The former Southampton winger has a huge future ahead of him.

Position: Midfielder
Danny Guthrie (Newcastle)
Having been brought into the team to cover the injuries to key midfielder's Tiote and Cabaye, Guthrie had alot to do. He was dominant in midfield during the win over Aston Villa and staked his claim for a regular place in the centre of midfield.

Position: Midfielder

Gylfi Sigurdsson (Swansea)
The newly signed on-loan Icelandic midfielder has settled into life at high flying Swansea already. He inspired the Swans comeback with a goal in the 55th minute and had a huge impact on the game. It was an excellent away win for the Welsh club who continue to surprise people with their performances.
Position: Midfielder
Juan Mata (Chelsea)
His wonder-strike against Manchester United capped off a brilliant hard-working performance from the Spanish winger. He has yet to hit his best form since signing from Valencia but his performances have shown promising signs.

Position: Forward
Robin Van Persie (Arsenal)
Yet another hat-trick for the Dutchman taking his tally to 28 for the season in 33 games. He has also overtaken the last great Dutchman at Arsenal, Dennis Bergkamp's goalscoring record. He scored his first goal just over a minute into the game and inspired Arsenal to a 7-1 win over Blackburn.

Position: Forward

Wayne Rooney (Manchester United)
Two penalties and two goals for the United forward. Rooney dispatched both with no hesitation and it was his calmness under pressure that dragged United right back into the game having previously been 3-0 down against Chelsea. Thanks to Rooney, United left Stamford Bridge with an unlikely point.
