Team of the week 27/02/12

27 February 2012 14:18
A return to Premier League action after last weekend's FA Cup break.

The main focus of the weekend was the North London derby between Arsenal and Tottenham. Elsewhere Manchester United travelled to Norwich and Newcastle faced struggling Wolves.

Here is the Football.co.uk Premier League team of the week.

Position : Goalkeeper
David De Gea (Manchester United)
The young Spanish keeper proved exactly what he is capable of with a superb display against Norwich City. A series of brilliant saves denied Norwich a point and kept United in the title race. He may not have had the best of times so far, but the future could still be very bright for the youngster on yesterday's evidence.

Position: Defender
Bacary Sagna (Arsenal)
Arsenal have missed Sagna this season and his return to the side has been a major boost defensively. His calm and assured performance was capped off with a headed goal to pull his side back into the game.

Position: Defender
Aaron Hughes (Fulham)
The Northern Irish defender announced his return to the national team last week and followed it up with an excellent display against Queens Park Rangers in the London derby on Saturday. Fulham kept cool at the back and came away with a well earned clean sheet and 3 points.

Position: Defender
Ashley Cole (Chelsea)
A rare clean sheet for Chelsea was just what Andre Villas Boas needed. Despite the absence of John Terry, the defence was well organised and marshalled by Ashley Cole who excelled without more experienced players alongside him.

Position: Midfielder
James Morrison (West Bromwich Albion)
The 25-year-old midfielder once again provided the cutting edge to West Brom's side during the thrashing of Sunderland. He scored one and played a part in the other three goals. With his form improving week-after-week, the Scottish midfielder could end up being considered as one of the players of the season.

Position: Midfielder
Frank Lampard (Chelsea)
Lampard became the first midfielder to score double figures in nine consecutive Premier League seasons. A well taken volley in the 3-0 win over Bolton helped Chelsea to a deserved three points as he entered his name into the history books.

Position: Midfielder
Cheick Tiote (Newcastle United)
The Ivorian defensive midfielder was hugely missed by Newcastle while he was with his country at the African Cup of Nations. His return to the team should provide a massive boost as Newcastle go in search of European football.

 Rosicky image

Position: Midfielder

Tomas Rosicky (Arsenal)
His movement for his vital goal against Tottenham was excellent. With Arsenal 2-0 down at home to their North London rivals, they were in need of something special which is exactly what Rosicky provided. His all round play and creativity was largely responsible for Arsenal's excellent comeback.

Position: Forward
Peter Odemwingie (West Bromwich Albion)
Five goals in two games from the Nigerian forward who is hitting form for the Baggies at a crucial time in the season. Sunderland seemed almost invincible going into the game but were quickly put to the sword by Odemwingie and his team mates, his second goal showed his goalscoring instincts.

Position: Forward
Moussa Dembele (Fulham)
Belgian forward Moussa Dembele was extrememly impressive, playing in an unfamiliar central midfield position. He set up the only goal of the game with a sublime back-heel into the path of Pavel Pogrebnyak and was excellent in the heart of Fulham's midfield.

Position: Forward
Robin van Persie (Arsenal)
Once again van Persie was the hero for Arsenal in the 5-2 win over North London rivals, Tottenham. His equalising goal was one of the best he will score this season and under the circumstances he wont score many more important either.
