Sunderland on Wednesday announced the signing of Italian goalkeeper Vito Mannone from Premier League rivals Arsenal.

The 25-year-old, a former Italy under-21 international, has signed a two-year contract at the Stadium of Light and cost Sunderland an undisclosed transfer fee reported to be around £2 million ($3.1 million, 2.4 million euros).

Sunderland sold first-choice goalkeeper Simon Mignolet to Liverpool last month and Mannone is expected to provide cover for Republic of Ireland international Keiren Westwood.

Sunderland manager Paolo Di Canio has already been busy in the transfer window, with Valentin Roberge, Modibo Diakite, Cabral, David Moberg Karlsson and Duncan Watmore having all joined the club since the end of last season.
