Steve McClaren begs for mercy as Wolfsburg look to ex-Spurs boss Martin Jol

Wolfsburg are lining up Martin Jol to be their manager - but Steve McClaren has begged for a stay of execution.[LNB]Former England boss McClaren is set to be sacked after seeing his side dumped out of the German Cup with a humiliating 3-1 home defeat at the hands of second division Cottbus.[LNB]Wolfsburg are also languishing 13th in the Bundesliga after seven league games without a win, but the boss has pointed the finger at his underachieving players.[LNB] Over and out: Steve McClaren faces the sack at German club Wolfsburg after a woeful start to his reign[LNB]'I don't fear the sack,' he insisted. 'The club needs to decide what changes are necessary. I hope I'm part of that process.'[LNB]Former Tottenham boss Jol, who quick as Ajax boss earlier this month, is the top contender to replace McClaren.[LNB]On standby: Martin Jol is being line-up by Wolfsburg[LNB]And the incumbent admitted after the Cottbus defeat: 'It was simply not good enough and the first half of the season was not good enough.[LNB]'I am disappointed, frustrated. We have problems in the dressing room, problems on the field. We have hit rock bottom.'[LNB]'This club needs changes. They may be drastic, but I cannot control them.[LNB]'I don't know how these changes are going to look precisely. Nobody knows what will happen in the coming days.[LNB]'We have got to take a decision quickly. Now is the time, during the winter break, to clean things up.'[LNB]McClaren wants to sign Holland midfielder Theo Janssen from his old club Twente, is keen on a central midfielder such as Arsenal's Denilson or Bayern Munich's Mark van Bommel, and is also looking at strikers to replace Manchester City target Edin Dzeko.[LNB]But Wolfsburg are expected to conclude that McClaren should be the first change after furnishing him with £30million of new talent in the shape of Diego, Simon Kjaer and Mario Mandzukiv in the summer.[LNB]General manager Dieter Hoeness said: 'We are going to have to discuss everything. I can assure you that I cannot sleep well.
