Standard Liege v Arsenal: Axel Witsel cleared to play despite serving ban for horror tackle

16 September 2009 11:42
The incident left Wasilewski with a double leg fracture and, although the Belgian Football Association had been expected to push for the ban to include European matches, Witsel will be available. "The rules are the rules and it's a common thing in football that a player who is suspended in a domestic league can play in Europe,” said Standard manager Laszlo Bolomi. “Why should Standard Liege make an exception for Witsel?" Like Wenger, Bolomi has previously coached at French clubs Nancy and Monaco during a distinguished career in football which, as a player, also included winning the European Cup in 1986 with Steaua Bucharest. "I thank Arsene Wenger for inviting me to Arsenal a couple of years ago,” said Bolomi. “He is a great man of the sport and is a great man at Arsenal, winning many trophies. Arsenal play the best football in England and in Europe you can only compare Barcelona to them. "Even when we are at 100 per cent we are still a little bit short to beat a great team like Arsenal. But this team has an ability to surprise big teams."
