Sportsmail's Premier League Christmas wishlist club-by-club

20 December 2010 12:10
You only have to look at a post-match interview to understand that Premier League managers are never fully satisfied.[LNB]And as a congested fixture list combines with a transfer window overthe next month, expect the excuses that flow like cheap wine following a 2-0 home defeat to be aspredictable as ever.[LNB]With problems both potential and immediate, Sportsmail looks at whatall 20 of the division's club managers will want most over Christmasand in their nature of always wanting more, a nice little stockingbonus too.[LNB]Arsenal - Arsene WengerFrom Santa...Shay Given[LNB]Already three different goalkeepers used this season, Wojciech Szczesny looked handy against Manchester United but is still very young for a goalkeeper. Gunners fans as ever are desperate for an established goalkeeper and the Irishman fits the bill.[LNB]Stocking bonus... A half-decent centre-back[LNB]Laurent Koscielny (left) is struggling to justify his price tag, Sebastien Squillaci has looked far from solid and with Thomas Vermaelen injured, Wenger will want some additional support at the back. Fulham are struggling and Wenger may reignite his interest in Hangeland who is proven at Premier League level.[LNB]Aston Villa - Gerard HoullierFrom Santa...Robbie Keane[LNB]The out of favour Tottenham star is this year's must have amongst many Premier League clubs, arguably no more so than Villa where Houllier's most effective striker this season has been a 'past it' Emile Heskey with just two league goals.[LNB]Stocking bonus...A spring chicken in goal[LNB]Brad Friedel has looked shaky between the sticks this season and it finally looks like age is catching up with the 39-year-old. Brad Guzan doesn't look good enough based on his brief Europa League appearances and Houllier may just put a cheeky loan bid in for Given (left), with Villa not likely to threaten Manchester City this season.[LNB]Birmingham City - Alex McLeishFrom Santa...Natural born wingers[LNB]James McFadden's injury has left City lacking some venom out on the flanks and they may look for a loan deal to tie them over for the majority of the season. Shaun Wright-Phillips (right) has fallen down the pecking order at Manchester City and his career needs a shot in the arm.[LNB]Stocking bonus...More value for moneyNikola Zigic has struggled to adjust to the English game and despite his two metre plus advantage is going missing in games, at £6Million McLeish would have expected more. The other big name summer arrival Alexander Hleb may be on loan but he has so far failed to light up St Andrews.[LNB] Blackburn - VACANTFrom Santa...A new manager[LNB]Managerless and therefore not likely to sign anyone until a successor to Sam Allardyce is found. Alan Shearer has ruled himself out and with difficult conditions to work under surrounding funds and expectations, many other managers will too. Steve Kean (right) may get the post on process of elimination.[LNB]Stocking bonus...David Bentley[LNB]It's not quite working out for Bentley at Tottenham and the right winger may decide it's time for a return to Ewood Park where he was on the verge of becoming David Beckham's successor for England. Mind you nobody else has quite taken that mantel yet.[LNB]Blackpool...Ian HollowayPlease Santa can I have...Pascal Chimbonda[LNB]Written off as no hopers at the start of the season, Holloway has done extraordinary to drag his team into the top-half of the table. He won't want to make drastic changes but the addition of Chimbonda would give his defence some Premier League nous which it does lack at times.[LNB]Stocking bonus...Back up for the keepersMatt Gilks was superb before his injury and Richard Kingson has been just as effective when he has come in. [LNB]Paul Rachubka may be slightly out his depth at this level and Holloway could look to bring Ben Amos from Manchester United as emergency cover or even as a starter.[LNB]Bolton - Owen CoyleFrom SantaJohan Elmander to sign a new deal. [LNB]Flopped badly last season but on fire this term as he tops Bolton's scoring charts. The Swede is out of contract at the end of the season and Coyle would be keen to keep the strike partnership of him and Kevin Davies.[LNB]Stocking bonus.a pay rise[LNB]This time last season, Bolton were fighting for their lives in the relegation zone. But since Coyle's arrival they have not only rocketed up to the outskirts of a Champions League place but are playing some nice stuff too. He is due some reward.[LNB]Chelsea - Carlo AncelottiFrom SantaRay Wilkins Mk II[LNB]With Wilkins as his assistant, Ancelotti won the double and made a storming start to this season. Since Butch's dismissal from the club, Chelsea have been in free-fall and Michael Emenalo fits like a square peg in a round hole.[LNB]Stocking bonusMamadou Sakho[LNB]With Ricardo Carvalho gone, the Chelsea defence has shown just how lightweight it is once Alex and John Terry are missing. Paris St Germain star Sakho is already an integral part of the French side's defence at just 20-years-old and is set for big things.[LNB] Everton - David MoyesFrom SantaA striker who scores[LNB]It does not look good for Everton's strikers when the top scorer of the lot is Jermaine Beckford (right). The free signing from Leeds has only bundled in three goals all season from his common role as a substitute and even he has been prone to some costly misses.[LNB]Stocking bonusSome home form[LNB]Just two home wins all season and no victories in their last four show Goodison Park is not that difficult to go to and get a result.West Brom's 4-1 win last month underlined Everton's home struggle which Moyes will be desperate to turn around.[LNB]Fulham - Mark HughesFrom SantaWins[LNB]The league's draw specialists with 10 so far, Hughes could do with turning a few of those into wins with his side sucked into a relegation battle. Especially away from home where Fulham have not won all season.[LNB]Stocking bonus... Returns of Bobby Zamora and Moussa Dembele[LNB]Zamora has played a major role in Fulham's domestic and European adventures in recent seasons but along with summer signing Dembele, has struggled with injuries that have seriously hampered the Welshman's brief tenure. Hughes needs them both back before it's too late.[LNB]Liverpool - Roy HodgsonFrom SantaThe A-Spec Fernando Torres[LNB]For one reason or another, the Spanish striker has not got going since Hodgson's arrival. Plagued by bad form since the World Cup, Liverpool's league campaign has suffered for it with the Spaniard particularly wasteful at pivotal moments against Tottenham and Newcastle.[LNB]Stocking bonusDecent away form[LNB]Liverpool were poor on the road before the ex-Fulham boss arrived but Hodgson's spell at Craven Cottage was hardly littered with away wins. The two combined have produced just one victory away from Anfield all season and as the board have noted, it's unacceptable.[LNB]Manchester City - Roberto ManciniFrom SantaTevez to stay[LNB]Mancini may have an eye on a lot of players during next month's transfer window but his biggest coup will be convincing want away Carlos Tevez to stay. Just goes to show that even in football money can't get you everything.[LNB]Stocking bonusBlank cheque book for the January sales[LNB]Many are set to go through the exit door at Eastlands but just as many are likely to come in, as Mancini prepares to become the football equivalent of a shopaholic at Lakeside as he searches for a possible Tevez replacement or by getting sucked into impulse buys.[LNB] Manchester United - Sir Alex FergusonFrom SantaAn outfield goal from Wayne Rooney[LNB]He was Fergie's weapon of choice last season but having failed to score from open play at all this term is turning into a dud. Two penalties is all the England striker has scored and he can't even be relied on for them anymore after a shocking miss against Arsenal, with the ball he blasted over last seeing orbiting Saturn.[LNB]Stocking bonus...A new goalkeeper[LNB]It took Fergie six years (with many goalkeepers and their howlers inbetween) to replace Peter Schmeichel. With Edwin van der Sar poised to announce his retirement at the end of this season, the United boss would enjoy piece of mind to know the gloves will fall into safe hands.[LNB]Newcastle - Alan PardewFrom SantaSome support[LNB]Lukewarm reception at best from the Newcastle fans, if they don't get behind the new boss at Tyneside then it's unlikely the players will and Pardew (right) could enjoy a tenure that made Hughton's look like a lifetime.[LNB]Stocking bonusFunds[LNB]Owner Mike Ashley (left) wants to sell the club, so how far will he back his new boss in January? Pardew will be keen to recruit some players and it's hard to see him taking the job without getting reassurances about the upcoming window.[LNB]Stoke - Tony PulisFrom Santa...Jermaine Pennant permanently[LNB]Rory Delap and his throw ins played a key part keeping Stoke in the Premier League early on but Pulis' team are made of stronger stuff these days. Matthew Etherington and Pennant provide natural width that have the Potters looking at an outside chance of Europe and Pulis will hope to secure the latter on a permanent basis.[LNB]Stocking bonus...Ref justice[LNB]Tight offside calls, disallowed goals and denied stonewall penalties are just the tip of the iceberg in decisions that have gone against Stoke this season. Sir Alex Ferguson once said 'it all evens itself out over a season' but Pulis will be happy for a couple of things to go his way over the season of goodwill.[LNB]Sunderland - Steve BruceFrom Santa...Reinforcements at the back[LNB]Bruce finds himself with three of his centre-backs in Michael Turner, Titus Bramble and Anton Ferdinand (right) all injured at some stage and has a defensive crisis on his hands. The Black Cats look so string in attack though, Ossie Ardiles' 2-3-5 formation with Spurs in the mid-90s could make a comeback.[LNB]Stocking bonus...Derby revenge[LNB]By far the biggest stain on Sunderland' season was there humiliating 5-1 defeat to bitter rivals Newcastle in the Tyne-Wear derby. With the reverse fixture due next month, Bruce (left) will be desperate to eradicate memories of what he described the worse day of his career.[LNB]Tottenham - Harry RedknappFrom Santa...A clean sheet[LNB]Since their opening day 0-0 draw with Manchester City, Spurs have conceded in every Premier League game. Ledley King, Michael Dawson and Jonathan Woodgate have all been missing for the majority but Redknapp's title hopes are small while he has a defence with more holes than a tennis racquet.[LNB]Stocking bonus...A penalty taker[LNB]Jermain Defoe, Roman Pavlyuchenko and Gareth Bale have all missed from 12 yards this season. If Redknapp does sign anyone in the upcoming transfer window, he can do worse than end Matthew Le Tissier's (left) retirement by bringing him back as a specialist substitute for such situations.[LNB] West Bromwich Albion - Roberto Di MatteoFrom Santa...Back up for Peter Odemwingie[LNB]The signing of the Nigerian may just be the masterstroke that keeps the Baggies safe from a relegation battle this season. Other than him the west Midlands club are desperately short of goals in attack, though Chris Brunt's artillery fire is a good plan B.[LNB]Stocking bonus...Consistency[LNB]It's all very well going to Arsenal and Everton and securing comfortable victories but the Baggies have been a bookie's delight with just as surprising results in losing to Wigan and Blackpool. Getting hammered 3-0 at home by a Stoke side who tend to be easy pickings on their travels underlines Di Matteo's (left) problems.[LNB]West Ham - Avram GrantFrom Santa...His job[LNB]His ultimatum of one win in three became two after the draw with Blackburn. It's not been easy for Grant who before the year is out could be left wondering what might have been if summer arrival Thomas Hitzlsperger (right) had not been out all season.[LNB]Stocking bonus...Creative flair[LNB]The hot and cold Victor Obinna (left) does his best on the left side but the Hammers have struggled to create goal scoring opportunities all season long. Grant (given he is still there) would like to link up with Spurs' Jamie O'Hara again after a productive spell at Portsmouth last season. [LNB]Wigan - Roberto MartinezFrom Santa...Back to back wins[LNB]In the Premier League it has never happened for Roberto Martinez and in a very tight table, six points will rocket them up from their current spot in the relegation zone. That won't be easy for a team that goes from extremes of winning at Tottenham to losing 6-0 at home to Chelsea.[LNB]Stocking bonus...Some fans[LNB]The DW Stadium is a very lonely place and is usually only two thirds full let alone packed to capacity. Home support is crucial to any team and Martinez would like more than just one man and his dog to turn up every other week.[LNB]Wolves - Mick McCarthyFrom Santa...Away wins[LNB]Or even points! Just one draw in their second game of the season at Everton is all the club have to show from the travels on the road, leaving them with a tough task to keep getting wins at Molineux. McCarthy (right) may have to think about 'parking the bus' in the second half of the season.[LNB]Stocking bonus...Return of the prodigal son[LNB]It's been 11 years since Robbie Keane (left) left Molineux to go on a rollercoaster career but with the Irishman bottom of the striking pecking order at Tottenham, McCarthy could bolster his forward line by offering the striker a starting spot. Can Wolves afford him? He is worth it on experience alone.[LNB] Barcelona lower sights to £10m Denilson as Arsenal team-mate Cesc Fabregas will cost too much for the CatalansWe're scared!
