Snood-wearing 'tarts' would not have survived in our day, insists Alan Brazil
Permed hairstyles and tight, skinny shorts may have been the orderof the day in the late 1970s and early 80s, but Alan Brazil looks atthe fashion trends of the modern-day footballer with incredulity. [LNB]The former Ipswich Town and Scotland striker says that PremierLeague players like Manchester City's Carlos Tevez and Arsenal'sMarouane Chamakh, who have started sporting snoods - neck-warmers -would not have survived alongside the alpha males in the dressing roomin his day. [LNB]'Bobby Robson said that therewere gloves and tights that we could wear, but our central defenderKevin Beattie got up and really tore into us, saying we were a rightbunch of tarts. [LNB]'He went out there in the shortest of shortsleeves and the tiniest of shorts. The locals must have thought "Who isthis nutcase?", but he was brilliant. [LNB]'I despair when I look at the players these days. They will be wearing duffle coats under their shirts next!"[LNB]Leicester City's Keith Weller was the first to wear tights, back in the 70s. Brazil doesn't have a problem with that, seeing them as beneficial in some circumstances.[LNB]He said: 'Tobe honest, wearing tights I can understand, especially if you've had ahamstring injury. But to see them wearing scarves, hats and gloves isridiculous. They've all gone soft. The 'Under Armour' gear they havenow is fantastic. [LNB]Equally, if you strike a bet in the first goalscorer market and your player is second on the score sheet with a 'Man In Tights' first, then you will be paid. [LNB]The same will apply to all correct score markets and half-time/full-time markets too.
