Silvestre targets good start
02 Apr 2009 - 09:42:28
Arsenal defender Mikael Silvestre is convinced that the current Gunners squad can challenge for next season's Premier League title.
Arsene Wenger's side have endured an inconsistent campaign and are currently ten points behind leaders Manchester United but the France international can see reasons for optimism.
He told the club's official website: "The team is definitely better than when I arrived.
"There have been some patches where we couldn't get the consistency but now, with the confidence and the number of goals we score, even if we had some draws in the Premier League, overall the performances have been really good. All the players have improved in every department.
"It has been very good progress. We can see that in the build-up of our game and in our attacking positions. Also, every player knows his job better than they did at the beginning of the season. That makes the team play better.
"We've got to believe that we can challenge next season. If we build on this season, which is not finished yet, there is a lot of reasons to think that we must challenge from day one for the title.
"You have to make a quick start, of course, because all the best teams take points. As soon as you drop two or three points, the gap is really big."
