Sign Cesc! Xavi admits he dreams of Fabregas leaving Arsenal for Barcelona

Xavi has called for Barcelona to sign Cesc Fabregas - ignoring Arsene Wenger's pleas for the European champions to stop their public pursuit of his Arsenal captain. Spain star Xavi rejects the idea that the idea that the two midfielders are too similar to play in the same team and has called on his bosses to follow up interest in the 22-year-old. Many commentators in Catalonia see Fabregas as the long-term successor to their 29-year-old midfield maestro, but Xavi wants the Gunners star to arrive sooner rather than later. 'Man, I'd like to play with him,' Xavi told Spanish newspaper El Mundo Deportivo. 'I've always said that in the national team I link up with Cesc very well, despite the fact that many say we can't play together. 'We demonstrated in the final of the European Championship that isn't true. 'For me it would be a dream if Cesc came. He is a football player with Barca DNA and he is showing at Arsenal that he is on another level. 'I would love him to sign and that we could play together at Barca. Clearly, a lot of his career is ahead of him and I think that in the future will be at Barca.' Barcelona waged a media offensive in their bid to sign Fabregas during the summer. Wenger had to fight off headlines on a daily basis with the Spanish giants declaring their interest both publicly and privately to local media. There was talk of a £25million bid, way short of an Arsenal price-tag thought to be in excess of £40m, and attempts to drive the price down by unsettling Fabregas failed. Some sources in Spain insist a deal has already been struck to take the Catalan-born player to the Nou Camp next summer, but the claims lead Wenger to blast the way Spain's top two clubs are run by presidents in need of votes. 'The day I agree to sell any player one year in advance then I will not be in this job,' Wenger said in August. Barcelona president Joan Laporta was first to claim Fabregas had Barca DNA with comments that angered Wenger this summer. Laporta has made no secret of the desire to resign a player who left them for the Gunners as a 16-year-old. Barcelona are still a midfielder and left winger short and are likely to strengthen in the winter transfer window. They also failed to sign Javier Mascherano from Liverpool and will need cover in midfield if, as expected, Seydou Keita and Yaya Toure go to the Africa Cup of Nations in January. Andres Iniesta is already being converted to the left wing position in favour of Thierry Henry, which frees up a berth for Fabregas to play alongside Xavi at the heart of Pep Guardiola's team.
