Arsenal appear to have beaten off competition from north London rivals Tottenham to sign Montenegrin defender Stefan Savic, according to the player himself.[LNB]The 19-year-old, who is currently contracted to Serbian side BSK Borca, claims a deal is due to be signed in the coming days following a successful trial period at the Gunners' training ground in leafy Hertfordshire.[LNB]Boss Arsene Wenger is still reeling from missing out on Chris Smalling, the defender who moved to Manchester United in January. The Frenchman is desperate to plug the gaps in his porous defence who were once again taught a brutal lesson by the country's elite as United recorded a 3-1 win at The Emirates on Sunday.[LNB]Speaking to homeland publication Blic online, Savic said: 'There were offers from Tottenham and Birmingham City, but once a call came from Arsenal, I had no more doubts. [LNB] Claims: Defender Stefan Savic (left) is capped at youth level for Montenegro[LNB]'Arsene Wenger made sure my papers were arranged for and my work permit extended so I can be at more training sessions. [LNB]'A pre-contract will be signed on Thursday and then I will return to Belgrade and join BSK for their preparations. I will be staying with BSK until May.' [LNB]'I was on the terraces and it must have been hard for the lads on the pitch,' Savic said. 'United had a terrific game, especially Nani. [LNB]'Wenger was extremely mad during the training session on Monday. This defeat means the league title will be extremely hard to reach right now.'[LNB]The player added: 'Wenger is the man. He has incredible authority at the club - everyone listens to him, assistants lead training sessions and he just supervises. Nothing can escape him.' [LNB] Rampant United would have made a Messi of the world's best, says Cesc Arsenal 1 Manchester United 3: Rooney shatters Gunners' title illusionsCompetition: Win an Arsenal shirt signed by skipper Cesc Fabregas Arsenal captain Cesc warns Gunners it will be win or bust against ChelseaARSENAL FC
