Arsenal.com have proudly announced that Santi Cazorla has been crowned Arsenal fans player of the season for 2012/13.
Arsenal fans will be divided about whether Santi did enough to win this prestigious accolade. Yes it is true he made a sensational start to his Emirates career as he stamped his authority on games as Arsenal made a strong start to last season. But, in truth after the Christmas period his influence on the games seemed to cool a little as opposing teams seemed to have him sussed a bit more. In addition the frenetic pace of the Premiership took its toll as for many games he tended to drift out and play little no part in influencing the outcome, particularly when Arsene Wenger’s team had that real wobble in the middle of the season which saw them lose to the likes of Bradford City FC and Blackburn Rovers in the domestic cups.
When we look at Santi Cazorla’s overall contribution over the season clearly it does not look bad. Arsenal paid £15M for the diminutive Spaniard. In 38 games Cazorla managed 115 shots at goal, scoring 12 premiership goals. He was also responsible for 11 assists. As first seasons go, this is pretty impressive, as it normally takes a player a while to bed in and Arsene Wenger will be thrilled with the return on his investment.
Personally, I made Theo Walcott my fans player of the year, as he battled to win over Wenger and the fans to establish himself as a brilliant striker both for club and country. Who do you think deserved the honour of fans player of the year and why?
