Robert Pires rejoins Arsenal and impresses Arsene Wenger

Robert Pires has been training with Arsenal as he looks for a new club - and Arsene Wenger admits the veteran winger is still 'sparkling'. The return of the 36-year-old to north London mirrors that of Sol Campbell, who was accommodated at London Colney by Wenger last season before eventually being offered a short-term contract. Return: Pires acknowledges the Arsenal fans after coming back with Villarreal in 2008 Pires has been training with the Gunners for a week and plans to stay on for at least another seven days to get in shape, but the boss is coy on whether there is any chance of him staying on a more permanent basis. Flashback: Wenger watches over Pires during training back in 2006 'He is sparkling,' Wenger told French newspaper Le Parisien. 'He's happy on the ball and physically he is fine. He can be of service in Ligue 1 (the French top division).' Pires is a free agent after leaving Spanish side Villarreal in the summer. There was talk of offers from America, China and Turkey among others in the summer, but the one-time France star is proving to be picky about his next destination. His £6m move from Marseille to Arsenal in 2000 was a coup for Wenger after the player's role in winning the European Championship with France attracted interest from across Europe. Pires was part of the last Arsenal side to win a trophy - the 2005 FA Cup - and left for Villarreal a year later having collected a trio of Cup winners' medals and two Premier League titles.  It's back on!
