Another sporting year is coming to an end, and once again 2010 has delivered the goods. An Olympic Winter Games, a World Cup and so many other marvellous events have kept us enthralled for the past twelve months. [LNB]Relive some of those memories with Sportsmail's monthly guide to another year to remember.[LNB] June 1 Arsenal winger Theo Walcott was the surprise omission from England's 23-man World Cup squad. Leighton Baines, Michael Dawson, Tom Huddlestone, Scott Parker, Adam Johnson and Darren Bent also missed the cut. Robin Soderling beat top seed Roger Federer 3-6 6-3 7-5 6-4 in their quarter-final at the French Open, ending Federer's run of 23 successive grand slam semi-finals and his own 12-0 losing record against the world No 1. Crystal Palace were saved from extinction after an agreement was reached in principle for the CPFC 2010 consortium to buy the club and their Selhurst Park ground. [LNB] Missing the cut: Walcott was a surprise omission from Capello's World Cup squad [LNB]2 The FA confirmed that Fabio Capello signed an amended contract just hours before the team flew out for the World Cup finals to commit his future to England until after Euro 2012. Arsenal announced they rejected an offer from Barcelona for midfielder Cesc Fabregas, adding that they had 'no intention of selling' their captain. West Ham confirmed they would make an announcement about their new manager within the next 24 hours, with former Portsmouth boss Avram Grant thought to be the front-runner. [LNB]3 Rafael Benitez left Liverpool by mutual consent after six years as manager, following a turbulent season which saw the Reds finish a disappointing seventh in the Barclays Premier League. West Ham announced that Avram Grant had been appointed as their new manager on a four-year contract. The 55-year-old's arrival was subject to being granted a work permit. Back-row forward Andy Powell was ruled out of Wales' June 5 clash against South Africa and their tour to New Zealand because of a thigh injury. [LNB]4 England captain Rio Ferdinand was ruled out of the World Cup after suffering a knee injury in training. Michael Dawson was called up as a replacement, with Steven Gerrard named as skipper. Ivory Coast captain Didier Drogba broke his arm in a friendly victory over Japan but was not ruled out of the World Cup. Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien signed a two-year extension to his contract, keeping him at Stamford Bridge until 2015. [LNB] Out: Ferdinand was ruled out of England's World Cup campaign after colliding with Emile Heskey in training [LNB]5 Germany defender Jerome Boateng agreed to join Manchester City from Hamburg on a five-year deal. Italy's Francesca Schiavone won the women's French Open title after defeating Australia's Samantha Stosur 6-4 7-6 (7/2) at Roland Garros. Workforce, trained by Sir Michael Stoute and ridden by Ryan Moore, won the Derby at Epsom. [LNB]He's at it again: Nadal won a fifth French Open with victory over Soderling in Paris [LNB]6 England beat Bangladesh by an innings and 80 runs in the second Test at Old Trafford to complete a 2-0 series victory. Steven Finn took five wickets and debutant Ajmal Shahzad three as the Tigers crumbled. Rafael Nadal won the French Open title for a fifth time after beating Robin Soderling 6-4 6-2 6-4 at Roland Garros. Fourteen spectators and two policemen were hurt in a stampede around the pre-World Cup friendly between North Korea and Nigeria. [LNB]7 Hull formally parted company with former manager Phil Brown, who had been placed on 'gardening leave' by the club on March 15. Mark Webber signed a new contract to remain at Red Bull for the 2011 Formula One season. St Mirren named Danny Lennon as their new manager. [LNB]8 Manchester City confirmed Martin Petrov, Sylvinho and Benjani Mwaruwari would leave the club in the summer. Portugal and Manchester United winger Nani was ruled out of the World Cup due to a collarbone injury. Fulham signed defender Philippe Senderos from Arsenal on a three-year deal. [LNB]9 Neil Lennon was appointed as the new manager of Clydesdale Bank Premier League Celtic. Chelsea confirmed that Joe Cole, Michael Ballack and Juliano Belletti were to be released by the club. Patrick Vieira signed a new one-year contract at Manchester City. [LNB]10 Inter Milan confirmed Rafael Benitez had signed a two-year deal to take charge of the Italian and European champions. The Rugby Football Union announced Shontayne Hape would make his Test debut for England against Australia in Perth. The Philadelphia Flyers beat the Chicago Blackhawks 4-3 in overtime in game six to win the Stanley Cup. [LNB]11 South Africa drew the opening match of the World Cup with Mexico 1-1 in Johannesburg. France failed to win their opening match at a World Cup finals for the third successive time after playing out a dull goalless draw with 10-man Uruguay. Defending champion Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal suffered early exits at the AEGON Championships at Queen's against Mardy Fish and Feliciano Lopez respectively. Argentina beatNigeria 1-0 while South Korea defeated Greece 2-0. England's rugbyunion side were beaten 27-17 by Australia in the first Test in Perth.[LNB]13 Slovenia beat Algeria 1-0, Serbia went down 2-0 to Ghana while Tim Cahill was sent off as Australia were thrashed 4-0 by Germany in the day's World Cup action. Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button claimed a McLaren one-two at the Canadian Grand Prix. Denmark's Thomas Bjorn won his first European Tour title for four years with a comprehensive five-shot victory at the Estoril Open de Portuga. [LNB]14 Fears were raised over Ledley King's fitness to play again in the World Cup as the Tottenham defender battled a groin injury. World Cup holders Italy were held to a 1-1 draw by Paraguay in their opening match, while Holland beat Denmark 2-0 and Japan were 1-0 winners over Cameroon. The Swiss Federal Court ruled that Adrian Mutu must pay Chelsea £14.3million in compensation for breaching his contract with the club when he failed a drugs test. [LNB]15 Brazil began their quest for a sixth world crown with a 2-1 victory over North Korea at Ellis Park, while Ivory Coast and Portugal opened their World Cup campaigns with a goalless draw and New Zealand snatched a last-gasp 1-1 draw with Slovakia. Rangers confirmed principal stakeholder Murray International Holdings was 'no longer actively marketing its controlling stake in the club for sale'. Matt Banahan was cited for an alleged dangerous tackle following England's 15-9 victory over the Australian Barbarians. Former Scotland boss George Burley was appointed Crystal Palace manager. In World Cup Group B, Gonzalo Higuain scored a hat-trick as Argentina beat South Korea 4-1 and Greece won their first World Cup finals match, beating Nigeria 2-1. France, the 1998 champions, were all but eliminated by a 2-0 Group A loss to Mexico. [LNB]18 England's World Cup hopes were left hanging by a thread after an awful goalless draw against Algeria in Cape Town. The United States came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Slovenia while Serbia beat Germany 1-0. The FA complained to FIFA after a fan managed to get into the England dressing room and confront David Beckham in the aftermath of their game. Birmingham striker Kevin Phillips signed a new one-year contract. Brazil qualified for the last 16 with a 3-1 victory over Ivory Coast in Group G.[LNB] 21 Fabio Capello said John Terry had made a very big mistake' by criticising the England manager in a press conference. Portugal thrashed North Korea 7-0, while Spain recorded a 2-0 win over Honduras and Chile edged out Switzerland 1-0. Top seed and defending champion Roger Federer began his Wimbledon campaign by coming from two sets behind to beat Colombian Alejandro Falla 5-7 4-6 6-4 7-6 (7/1) 6-0 in the first round. Top seed and defending champion Serena Williams cruised through her first-round match at Wimbledon as she defeated Portugal's Michelle Larcher De Brito 6-0 6-4. Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal both progressed as well. England beat Australia by four wickets in the first NatWest Series one-day international at the Rose Bowl. [LNB]23 Jermain Defoe scored the only goal of the match as England won their final World Cup group match against Slovenia 1-0. Results elsewhere ensured their last-16 clash would be against old rivals Germany. The other last 16-match decided on the night pitted Ghana against the United States. The final set of John Isner and Nicolas Mahut's second-round match at Wimbledon was tied at a world record 59-59 before play was suspended for the day. [LNB]24 Reigning world champions Italy were dumped out of the World Cup after a 3-2 defeat to Slovakia. John Isner eventually secured victory in his record-breaking first-round tie against Nicolas Mahut at Wimbledon, taking the final set 70-68 after a match lasting 11 hours and five minutes. John Isner unsurprisingly had nothing left in the tank after his win over Nicolas Mahut, losing 6-0 6-3 6-2 in the second round of Wimbledon to Holland's Thiemo de Bakker - who had himself beaten Colombia's Santiago Giraldo 16-14 in a fifth set in the first round. [LNB]26 Uruguay became the first team through to the quarter-finals of the World Cup after they beat South Korea 2-1. Ghana joined them with a 2-1 extra-time win against the United States. Andy Murray beat Gilles Simon of France 6-1 6-4 6-4 to reach the fourth round at Wimbledon. Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull) claimed pole for the European Formula One Grand Prix in Valencia ahead of his team-mate Mark Webber and Lewis Hamilton (McLaren). [LNB]27 England were dumped out of the World Cup in the last 16 after a humiliating 4-1 defeat against Germany in Bloemfontein. Joachim Low's side booked a quarter-final with Argentina after Diego Maradona's men beat Mexico 3-1. Sebastian Vettel won the European Grand Prix ahead of the McLarens of Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button as Mark Webber walked away from a huge 190mph crash. England secured an unassailable 3-0 lead in the NatWest series against Australia with a one-wicket win at Old Trafford.
