No defensive midfielder at Arsenal, Mistake or Sheer Brilliance?
The headline grabber in the summer of 2012 was certainly Robin Van Persie’s move from Arsenal to Manchester United. However, days prior to the start of the EPL season, Arsenal lost Alex Song to Barcelona. For some, this loss was of greater magnitude as no cover was in place and little time was left for one to be acquired.
Arsenal haspredominantly been a team with the strong belief of having a defensive midfielder to provide necessary cover for the back four. Throughout Arsene Wenger’s reign at the club, some of the world’s best players have filled up this position. Failing to provide an alternative for Alex Song, Arsene Wenger has been forced to play certain players out of position.Mikel Arteta, Abou Diaby& Aaron Ramsey have all provided cover, yet in certain games the absence of a genuine defensive midfielder has been evident. However, in other games this season these playershave proved to be vital in an attacking form and thus helping the team move forward.
This season, Arsenal, have conceded 29goals after 25 EPL games,7 lesser than last season. The importance of a defensive midfielder in any team cannot be understated, but this new concept could be the way forward for Arsenal’s aspirations for acquiring the Champions League spot.
