Rejected: Newcastle have turned down Spurs' bid for Bassong Newcastle United have rejected a £10 million bid from Tottenham Hotspur for defender Sebastien Bassong. White Hart Lane boss Harry Redknapp has targeted the former France Under 21 international after the Magpies' top-flight relegation last season. And with central defensive trio Ledley King, Michael Dawson and Jonathan Woodgate all facing the prospect of missing the start of the Barclays Premier League season through injury, Redknapp has stepped up his interest in Bassong. But the north Londoners will have to return with a second improved bid after having their first offer rebuffed by the Toon board. Arsenal are also keen in the 23-year-old defender - but were put off by Newcastle's initial £15m price tag.
