Match Preview: Arsenal vs Liverpool

The Gunners. The Reds. Two teams who have shared Premier League glory over the last century.

Although not close in vicinity, these two teams have sparked a rivalry since the start of the Premier League.  Liverpool and Arsenal have dueled it out for Premier League honors, FA Cup honors, and League Cup honors combining for 31 League titles, 17 FA cups, and 8 League cups.

Liverpool is one of the most successful and decorated clubs in England and has won more European trophies than any other English team (5 Euro cups, 3 UEFA cups, and 3 UEFA Super Cups).  Did I forget to mention the 18 League titles, 7 FA cups and 8 League cups.

It’s an impressive resume however the last time Liverpool has won a Premier League title was during the 1989-90 season.  They are off to a flying start this season under manager Brendan Rogers and it suggests that this could be a year for a title run.

Let’s move on to our Gunners.  Arsenal is on the list as one of the most successful clubs in England ever.  They have 13 League titles, including an unbeaten 03-04 campaign, and 10 FA cups.  Two of the FA cups victories came against Liverpool.  I’m sure all of you older supporters will never forget Charlie George’s winner in the 1971 FA Cup against Liverpool at Wembley.

And how could any Arsenal fan, young and old, not remember watching or reading about the dramatic game against Liverpool at Anfield in May 1989, when Alan Smith and Michael Thomas led the Gunners to victory and sealed another Premier League title?

The history of the two clubs share their own highs and lows but now we look at the current 2013-14 Premier League campaign.  A game that will be played at the Emirates Stadium in North London, Arsenal look to stay on top of the Premier League against a talented, offensive Liverpool side.

Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez have been a deadly attacking duo for Liverpool since Suarez’s return from suspension.  Sturridge and Suarez have a combined 14 goals in the Premier League this season and that number is only going to rise.

Arsenal have found success scoring goals through the likes of Olivier Giroud and Aaron Ramsey, both of whom have had fantastic starts to this Premier League season.  Talent in the midfield, with Santi Cazorla and Mesut Ozil, will also help the lead the charge.

Both defensive lines and goalkeepers are solid and have only given up 17 goals combined this season (Arsenal with 9, Liverpool with 8) but look for a lot of goals come Saturday.  Arsenal and Liverpool have a history of scoring a lot of goals against each other, especially since going back to 2004.
