Marseille 1 Arsenal 2: Player Ratings

19 September 2013 10:28
This game was a battle, with Marseille largely dictating play during the first half.

They had a few half chances, but Arsenal kept them from creating decisive opportunities.

The second half opened the play up more and Arsenal started to create more chances as Marseille started to tire. It was a mistake which finally opened the scoring; Walcott punishing a poor Marseille header.

Gibbs would find Ramsey in space and he made the game safe with a deflected strike. Ironically, Ramsey allowed Marseille a glimmer of hope when he sloppily gave away a penalty in extra-time.

Arsene Wenger will be happy with the win, which puts the Gunners in the driving seat if they take advantage of their coming home games.

Szczesny 7.  He had no great saves to make during the game, but he had to save a number of shots and looked pretty solid throughout. Will be upset they gave away the penalty at the end of the game.

Sagna 6.  An all round solid performance by Sagna, although his offensive contribution to the game was minimal.

Mertesacker 6. His wild attempted clearance almost was an own goal, but he kept his composure and didn’t allow Marseille any gilt edged chances.

Koscielny 7.  A good game for Laurent, but again he made a rash challenge in the first half. Luckily it was far from the box.

Gibbs 8.  My man of the match. He cleared Mertesacker’s ball off the line and assisted on both of the goals. He played solid defensively and was dangerous going forwards.

Flamini 7.  A tireless performance, harrying the Marseille players. He made a few poor passes, but was solid throughout.

Ramsey 8.  Another goal, another great game. He’s our leading scorer this season. Hard to believe. Will not be happy he gave away a penalty at the end.

Wilshere 7.  A good game from Jack, although he looked tired near the end.

Ozil 7.  His second half was much better than his first half. Almost scored when set up by Monreal. Didn’t have a lot of space early in the game, but worked hard throughout.

Walcott 7.  Lively start, then he disappeared at times during the game. Great finish for his first goal of the season. Hopefully that will kickstart his season.

Giroud 7.  A tough day in the trenches for Giroud. He had a couple of half chances, but he battled hard against the physical Marseille defenders.

Substitutes:

Monreal 7.  A good outing for Nacho. He set up Ozil in the box, however he narrowly missed.

Miyaichi n/a.  Managed a couple of minutes for his first Champions League outing for the Gunners.
