Latin lessons for every club: 10 South Americans to follow Tevez, Robinho and Santa Cruz to the Prem
Published : 14 May 2009 10:54:50
It's not so long ago that South Americans wouldn't be caught dead in England's top flight. For decades we watched in awe as the Brazilians, Uruguayans and Argentines ruled in World Cups with a swagger that didn't quite sit right with the no-nonsense English approach. Then when Mirandinha blazed a trail in 1987 as the first Brazilian to play in England, it was not too long before he was sent packing by Newcastle for being all tricks and no end product. How things have changed. Now we can't get enough of Diegos, Juans and Robsons and, as the summer transfer merry-go-round approaches, Sportsmail takes a look at a clutch of players whose agents could be very busy in the summer, with expert analysis from Championship Manager... Club: River Plate (Arg) Position: Centre forward Market value: £5million Sportsmail say he would suit: Previously linked to Arsenal and Tottenham, he's a striker with flair and strength. Teams like Everton and Sunderland, who could do with adding attacking options, may see him as affordable. For further analysis, click here. Diego Buonanotte, 21 Full name: Diego Mario Buonanotte Rende (Arg) Club: River Plate (Arg) Position: Attacking midfielder/left winger Market value: £7m Sportsmail say he would suit: Liverpool have been linked to the tiny attacking player, looks more like a Newcastle or West Ham 'entertainer' or would be a good impact signing for newly promoted Birmingham. For further analysis, click here. Douglas Costa, 18 Full name: Douglas Costa de Souza (Brz) Club: Gremio (Brz) Position: Attacking midfielder Market value: £8.5m Sportsmail say he would suit: Strongly linked to Manchester United, who have scouted him. Liverpool have been mentioned. He's the type of player Wigan could invest the cash in from selling Antonio Valencia. For further analysis, click here. Hernanes, 23 Full name: Anderson Hernanes de Carvalho Andrade Lima (Brz) Club: Sao Paulo Position: Centre midfield Market value: £17.5m Sportsmail say he would suit: Linked to Chelsea, who in fairness have one of the best midfields in the Premier League. Price tag is prohibitive, but would be a good replacement if Cesc Fabregas leaves Arsenal. For further analysis, click here. Keirrison, 20 Full name: Keirrison de Souza Carneiro (Brz) Club: Palmeiras (Brz) Position: Striker Market value: £12m Sportsmail say he would suit: Linked with Liverpool. Brazilians are very excited about him and would suit an ambitious Manchester City. Ever looking for strikers, Totttenham could take a look. For further analysis, click here. Neymar, 17 Full name: Neymar da Silva Santos Junior (Brz) Club: Santos Position: Striker Market value: £6m (and rising) Sportsmail say he would suit: One for the big boys. It is claimed in Spain he already has an agreement with Real Madrid. Manchester is a potential destination, to United or City. For further analysis, click here. Franco Zuculini, 18 Nationality: Argentine. Club: Racing Club de Avellaneda (Arg) Position: Defensive midfielder Market value: £4m Sportsmail say he would suit: Liverpool and Manchester United have been mentioned, but probably more at the level of Aston Villa, or a player to beef up Blackburn's midfield. For further analysis, click here. Eduardo Salvio, 18 Full name: Eduardo Antonio Salvio (Arg) Club: Lanus Position: Winger Market value: £5m Sportsmail say he would suit: One for Celtic or Rangers to fight over. Hull could have a look if they stay up, or he has the kind of unfinished-article look that Roy Hodgson could develop at Fulham. For further analysis, click here. Dentinho, 19 Full name: Bruno Ferreira Bonfim (Brz, pictured centre) Club: Corinthians Position: Centre forward Market value: £5m Sportsmail say he would suit: A long-term target for Arsenal and Chelsea, but he has failed to push on in the way hoped. Might instead be the man to add goals to a West Brom attack should they do the impossible and stay up. For further analysis, click here. Diego Valeri, 23Full name: Diego Hernan Valeri (Arg) Club: Lanus Position: Attacking midfield Market value: £2.5m Sportsmail say he would suit: Eyed in Italy, but a potential bargain for one of the Premier League's smaller fish. Stoke, Bolton, Portsmouth or Middlesbrough could fill their boots. For further analysis, click here.
