Late flurry pleases Wenger
29 Apr 2008 - 08:19:05
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger thought his side could have scored even more goals at Pride Park after watching Emmanuel Adebayor grab a hat-trick in the 6-2 demolition of hapless Derby County.
The Rams only trailed 3-2 with 12 minutes left but conceded three late goals as they tired and have now let in six goals in each of their last two home matches.
Wenger said after the rout: "We tried to play well. We had a game based on movement, technique and combination and we nearly respected that for 95 per cent of the game, not 100, but there is still room for improvement there.
"In the second half when Derby were tiring we could have scored more goals.
"I think Adebayor took advantage of the work the team had done in the first half, it was easier.
"We know he can score goals, he has now scored 24 (in the league) but van Persie played well and (Nicklas) Bendtner played well as well.
"We have 77 points tonight and we wanted to win our three games remaining this season. For me the team has grown and we're now stronger than we were at the start of the season but we went through a difficult patch in March and we paid for that.
"Now that the pressure is gone we are back to our real level and I feel our real level is better than at the start of the season."
