Jose Mourinho should be punished! Arsene Wenger blasts red-card scam

25 November 2010 23:01
Arsene Wenger has urged UEFA to punish Jose Mourinho and Real Madrid for the 'horrible' charade which led to suspicious red cards for Xabi Alonso and Sergio Ramos. [LNB]UEFA launched an inquiry into the actions of Mourinho, Alonso and Ramos on Thursday. All could face hefty punishments if they are found guilty of misconduct. [LNB]The players stand accused of getting themselves deliberately sent off in Tuesday's Champions League tie against Ajax. Real boss Mourinho was dubbed the 'enemy of football' by UEFA in 2005 for his criticism of the referee Anders Frisk. [LNB] Enlarge Suspicious: Mourinho appears to feed instructions to Ramos via Jerzy Dudek (top right) and Iker Casillas (No 1)[LNB]European football's governing body will also investigate Real goalkeepers Iker Casillas and Jerzy Dudek fortheir alleged roles in the relaying of instructions from the bench. [LNB]The case will be heard on Tuesday andhas potential ramifications for Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham, who could all face Real Madrid in the first knock-out round if they qualify for the next phase as runners-up in their groups. [LNB]Wenger said: 'There should be sanctions. I do not want to see that. It's a pity to see it from a big game. It gives a bad image. [LNB] Punish Jose: Wenger has called for UEFA to take action against Mourinho[LNB]'I respect Real Madrid for their quality and for what they are doing, but whether it's them or somebody else, you don't want to see that on the football pitch. [LNB]'You want to respect people who pay money to watch a game. What do they want? To watch a football game, not to watch these kind of things. You don't want to accept that.' [LNB] Off day: Ramos is given his marching orders as Real Madrid canter to victory[LNB]Alonso and Ramos were sent off in thefinal moments of a 4-0 win against Ajax, both collecting second yellow cards for blatant time-wasting. [LNB]With Real assured of qualifying for the last 16 as Group G winners and the two players only one booking froma ban, the red cards mean they would serve their suspension in a meaningless group game against Auxerre and have a clean disciplinary slate going into the knockout rounds. [LNB]Replays and still photographs look damning because they show a series of whispers from Mourinho to Dudek toCasillas and then to Alonso and Ramos. [LNB]Shabby affair: Alonso (far left) is sent off by referee Thomson[LNB]Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe also supported UEFA's decision to charge Mourinho, writing on his Twitter site: 'Good to hear that UEFA will be taking action - Mourinho's a top coach but that sort of thing can't go on.' [LNB]Mourinho denies any skulduggery but Wenger is in no doubt. 'When you see how it looks on television, it is the best demonstration to never do it again because, frankly, it looks horrible,' added the Arsenal boss. [LNB]'I'm not saying I'm better than Jose Mourinho or more of an example than him. I just think it doesn't look good.' [LNB]Arsenal, who have lost control of Group H with successive defeats away to Shakhtar Donetsk and Braga, could face Real in the next round if they qualify in second place. [LNB]Spurs and United have both qualified for the last 16 but could also be drawn against Mourinho's team if they surrender top spot in their final group games. [LNB]Champions League regulations allow UEFA to 'augment' any suspension, so Ramos and Alonso could have their automatic one-match bans extended to cover the knockout phase. [LNB]Lyon's Cris and Juninho were fined for deliberately picking up yellow cards in a Champions League group game against Fiorentina in order to serve their suspension before the knockout phase; they bragged about it in television interviews. [LNB]Cluj manager Sorin Cartu was sacked yesterday and charged with improper conduct following his 'kung-fu' assault on the Perspex dug-out in Basle on Tuesday, when Cluj lost 1-0.
