Jamie Redknapp's weekend watch: Lucas and Mascherano were too quick

26 October 2009 08:07
MIDFIELD MASTERS [LNB]Liverpool's players stood up to be counted. Lucas and Javier Mascherano (right) haven't been at it this season, but they were too quick and too powerful for Manchester United's central pairing of Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick.[LNB]MISSING FLETCHER [LNB]Only when you see Manchester United beaten like they were at Anfield do you appreciate what a good player Darren Fletcher is and how important he has become to them. They missed his energy and his power. He would have stood up to Liverpool.[LNB]LETTING IT SLIP [LNB]Arsene Wenger is a master at finding outfield players, but he seems to have a blind spot when it comes to goalkeepers. Arsenal still don't have a top-class keeper on their books and this season it is costing them points they should have in the bag.[LNB]HINES HAS VARIETY [LNB]Zavon Hines looks like another find from West Ham's academy. He's quick, makes defenders look like they are running backwards and came on to make a huge difference for Gianfranco Zola. That was some second half from a struggling West Ham.[LNB]GEORDIE PRIDE [LNB]Did you notice the biggest gate of the day on Saturday? 43,949 fans turned up to watch Newcastle play Doncaster. I know they are top of the Championship, but those Geordie supporters are something else after what has happened to their club.[LNB]NO ORDINARY JOE [LNB]Somebody said Frank Lampard had gone seven months without scoring in open play, but that didn't last beyond Saturday when his two goals helped propel Chelsea back to top form. Good to see Joe Cole back too. He was outstanding.[LNB]PEGGED BACK [LNB]Two top teams were two up with 20 minutes left and they threw it away. A bad day for Arsenal and Manchester City's 2-2 draw with Fulham is their first poor result of the season when they were cruising. Mark Hughes will demand more than that.[LNB] Liverpool 2 Manchester United 0: Fernando Torres and David Ngog get reds back on rack as Nemanja Vidic is sent offWest Ham 2 Arsenal 2: Late Alessandro Diamanti penalty denies Arsene Wenger a birthday win as Gunners throw away two-goal lead Man City 2 Fulham 2: Hughes calls for defensive improvement as City throw away two-goal lead Bolton 3 Everton 2: Klasnic leaves it late to edge thriller for Megson's sideChelsea 5 Blackburn 0: Five star Blues head back to the top of Premier LeagueHull 0 Portsmouth 0: Dozy Jozy leaves Tigers all of a twitter as strugglers drawBurnley 1 Wigan 3: Rodallega is double trouble for the ClaretsTottenham 0 Stoke 1: Whelan is the party pooper as City forget scriptWolves 1 Aston Villa 1: Ebanks-Blake smashes in leveller to deny VillaBirmingham 2 Sunderland 1: Bruce fails to deflate optimism at St Andrews [LNB] [LNB] [LNB]  Explore more:People:MARK HUGHES, MICHAEL CARRICK, Javier Mascherano, Paul Scholes, Joe Cole, Darren Fletcher, Gianfranco Zola, Jamie Redknapp, Frank LampardPlaces:Newcastle, Liverpool
