Jamie Redknapp's weekend watch: Hard work pays for Fulham keeper David Stockdale

Taking his chance: Fulham's David Stockdale[LNB]HARD WORK PAYS When I was in training for Soccer Aid this year at Fulham's training ground, there was a young man who was working out there. His name was David Stockdale and he looked as if he was working off some weight. [LNB]How that hard work has paid off for him. He's in goal for unbeaten Fulham, taking his chance and now he's in the England squad.[LNB] HIGHS AND LOWS A real eye-opener for Spurs, against Roberto Martinez's Wigan, after the euphoria of qualifying for the Champions League and drawing Inter Milan. [LNB]The Champions League is physically and mentally demanding and clubs return to their domestic games and often have to grind out wins when they are not playing at their best. It has to be a lesson learned. [LNB]THINK OF ENGLAND I likethe Spanish style; their midfielders are tidy, clever and they arecomfortable with the ball. I can see why we are all attracted to them. [LNB]HUNGRY WOLVES I enjoyed watching Carl Henry, the Wolves captain, getting stuck in against Newcastle. It was like a throwback to a day when tackling was more a part of the game. [LNB]Fans love a crunching 50-50 challenge. Michel Platini of UEFA and so many foreign managers want a non-contact game now, but ask the Wolves fans if they enjoyed the physical contact.[LNB]GRAVEYARD SHIFT JackRodwell is such a good player as a central midfielder, but Everton usedhim on the right side, just to get him in the team. In the game, that'sknown as the graveyard shift, when you are played out of position. [LNB]StevenGerrard played at right back for Liverpool as a kid. We won't see thebest of Rodwell out there, but he has to use this to gain experience.[LNB] Centre of attention: But Jack Rodwell was played on the right on Sunday[LNB]Perfect 10... if he plays: Robin van Persie [LNB]RELIANT ROBIN? A new number for Robin van Persie, who has taken on Dennis Bergkamp's Arsenal No10 shirt. [LNB]I hope the number brings him some luck. He's such a good player, but suffers so many injuries and is out for two weeks after a knock at Blackburn. [LNB]Arsenal finished 11 points behind Chelsea last time and if they're to make that up, they need him fit.[LNB]A GOOD BUY, ROY Liverpool fans, who may have been looking for big money signings, might not appreciate the quality of Paul Konchesky. But he's a good signing for Roy Hodgson, who knows what he is getting after they worked together at Fulham last season. [LNB]I played with Paul at Spurs and he's a superb one-on-one defender, with quick feet and who loves the showdown between full-back and winger. It's hard to find good left backs. He's one of them.
