Arsenal Match Reports

Founded in 1886 by workers at the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich, the Gunners now enjoy the longest consecutive run in the top-flight of any club. Along the way they've achieved plenty of success, too.

Howard Chapman was the architect of Arsenal's dominance in the 1930s, but it wasn't until 1971 that the club enjoyed their first 'Double'. The Gunners then endured a period of mediocrity before George Graham, one of the heroes of the '71 team, returned as manager in 1986. Within three years the Gunners were champions, and another championship followed in 1991.

The unknown Arsene Wenger took over in 1996, and quickly set about ridiculing jibes of 'Arsene who?': the Frenchman won the Double in his first full season in England and another in 2002. The club’s spending power in the transfer market may have been weakened recently by plans to leave Highbury and relocate at Ashburton Grove but the Gunners remain one of the giants in English football.

Fast Fact: Arsenal moved to Highbury in 1913 after originally being based in the Borough of Woolwich in South London.

Fast Fact: Arsenal were the first British club to play with floodlights - sixteen lamps were used to illuminate a friendly against Hapoel Tel Aviv at Highbury in September 1951
