How Danny Rose the wonder boy became a Tottenham hero
Danny Rose had expected to make his Premier League debut by running on for a few minutes against Portsmouth. But Harry Redknapp had other ideas. [LNB]Three weeks later, the 19-year-old was catapulted into his first league start for Spurs against north London rivals Arsenal. [LNB]And what a beginning. Rose produced a moment of brilliance that will be long remembered, when his 30-yard first-time left-foot volley flew past Manuel Almunia. I could have got a few minutes against Portsmouthand he (Redknapp) has just thrown me in against Arsenal, third in theleague, a north London derby. It doesn't come much harder than that.' [LNB]Rose was substituted at half-time with a tweaked knee ligament, but he had made his mark in a match Spurs went on to win 2-1. [LNB]He said: 'I just didn't know what to do. I ran one way, then anotherto look for my dad, Nigel, and all of a sudden they were kicking off.I'd like to think it will be up there when it comes to goal of theseason. I hope my mum has taped it for me.' In2006, he was one of three Leeds players whom chairman Ken Bates claimedChelsea had tapped up. MICHAEL CARRICK: Played with Cole in Youth Cup, has 20 England caps. JERMAIN DEFOE: Poached from Charlton at 16 for £1.5m. Joined Harry at Portsmouth and Spurs. THEO WALCOTT: Youngest ever Southampton player at 16 in 2005. Now at Arsenal.[LNB][LNB]Tom Taiwo and Michael Woods later joined the Premier League club,but Rose stayed put. Taiwo, now 20, signed for League One CarlisleUnited in January and Woods, also 20, has played just four matches forChelsea's reserves this season. [LNB]But Rose moved to White Hart Lane for £1million in the summer of 2007, following his fellow former Leeds player Aaron Lennon. [LNB]'Aaron has been like an older brother to me and looked after memassively,' he said. Rose, an England Under 21 player, spent the secondhalf of 2008-09 on loan at Watford.[LNB] In August 2009 he made his Spurs first-team debut in a 5-1 CarlingCup win over Doncaster Rovers, then spent two months at Peterborough. [LNB]Three FA Cup appearances followed at Tottenham, but Wednesday was Rose's first top-flight start.[LNB] 'I had an inkling I was going to play, but I didn't take anythingfor granted until I saw the team ...
