Heurelho Gomes warns Tottenham must find ruthless streak to fight for the title

Heurelho Gomes has questioned if Tottenham have the character to challenge for the Barclays Premier League crown.[LNB]The Brazil goalkeeper insists Spurs have the players to match all-comers, but believes Chelsea and Manchester United are more ruthless at dispatching weaker rivals.[LNB]Injury-ravaged Chelsea's recent slip has helped Tottenham to within six points of the top of the table, but Gomes cautioned: 'We will have to change to fight for the title.'[LNB] Must do better: Gomes demands high standards from Tottenham[LNB]In an interview with Brazilian website Globoesporte, he added: 'We have quality. We are not as strong as Chelsea and Manchester United as a group, but individually we're no less than great teams.[LNB]'When the team is strong as a whole, they don't wobble as we have been doing in some games. [LNB]'In the League, for example, we've lost some games because of conceding stupid goals. When a team is together, they don't suffer like that. We have to grow together.'[LNB]Spurs showed character to come from two goals down to win the north London derby at Arsenal on Saturday, but cheap defeats earlier in the season against Wigan, West Ham and Bolton have proved costly.[LNB]'Maybe we need another season to challenge for the title,' he said. 'Our team is growing, picking up confidence.[LNB] Hammered: Frederic Piquionne (third left) helps West Ham to a 1-0 win against Spurs in September[LNB]'But to take the title I think we have to stop dropping points against smaller teams. You don't see Chelsea or Manchester United wasting those points. Besides, I don't know if we can make up six points on Chelsea, but all is not lost.'[LNB]One team you are unlikely to see him tipping for the title, though, are rivals Arsenal. The Gunners are just two points off the top, but four defeats in their last six games have raised familiar debates about Arsene Wenger's young side.[LNB]'Arsenal are not a very mature team, we are stronger in that sense,' said Gomes. 'Last weekend (in the derby), a more experienced team would never have been turned over like they suffered against us.'[LNB]The 29-year-old is set to line up against Werder Bremen in a Champions League campaign that has brought the best out of out his team-mate Gareth Bale.[LNB] Turnaround: Bale (centre) scores on the way to Spurs' 3-2 win against Arsenal[LNB]The rise of the Wales winger, who scored three goals in two virtuoso performances against European champions Inter Milan, has come as no surprise to the former PSV Eindhoven goalkeeper.[LNB]'For those of us who have worked with him for a while, it's not surprising,' he said. 'He started to play regularly in the middle of last season and maybe that didn't cause so many repercussions outside of England. [LNB]'But his good performances against Inter showed it for the whole world. He is a player who I already had a lot of admiration for before he was playing, but the coach didn't have confidence in him.'[LNB] Redknapp's message for returning Defoe...
