Arsenal captain Thierry Henry picked up a foot injury in training on Tuesday and will miss the Champions League Group G opener against Hamburg.
The Frenchman only needs one more goal to reach 50 goals in the competition but will now have to wait until the game against FC Porto later this month to have the chance of reaching that landmark figure.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has named an 18-man squad for Wednesday's match. Jens Lehmann returns after serving a two-game ban following his dismissal in last season's Champions League Final against Barcelona.
Theo Walcott is also included in the squad after after being rested for Saturday's 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough.
Wenger has been unhappy with the whirlwind start to the season particularly as so many of his players have been away on international duty.
He said: "I feel what would help is that we could keep our players for a while and practice because there are some players in my team whom I have not seen since training last season.
"The international players have been away for two weeks, and before that they were away the week before the Premiership started. In between, we played in the Champions League.
"They have trained one or two days - but you do not have the consistent presence of your players."
