Hangeland interest 'worries' Hodgson

Hangeland is being considered by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger as a potential replacement for Kolo Toure, who was sold to Manchester City. Arsenal have made no official contact regarding the Norway international and Hodgson is hopeful Wenger decides against picking up the telephone. But Hodgson knows that Fulham would have to seriously consider any big-money offer for the centre-back. "It is a source of worry if a bigger club is interested because Brede is an important player," said Hodgson. "He is one of our key figures and if we lost a key figure it would be an enormous blow for us. "There is a long way to go before that happens. First they have to contact the club and we would have to make sure any deal suits us all." Hodgson signed Hangeland from FC Copenhagen in January last year and his partnership with Aaron Hughes was key to Fulham's seventh-place finish. The Cottagers boasted the fourth-best defensive record in the Premier League last year, behind only champions Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool. Hughes said: "He is one of the best centre-halves in the league. It is really important he stays here. He is a massive player for us. "He was one of our best players last season and he has had a great 18 months since he came to the club. "He maybe surprised a lot of people who didn't know too much about him but he he is captain of his country now and it looks like he is just going to get better and better. "Hopefully he can stay here and we can push on." After defeating FK Vetra this week, Fulham face Russian side Amkar Perm in a play-off to reach the group stage.
