Gunners confirm Gallas blow
09 Apr 2009 - 13:32:35
Arsenal defender William Gallas has been ruled out for the remainder of the season with medial knee ligament damage.
Gallas, 31, suffered the season-ending blow during Tuesday's 1-1 Champions League quarter-final first leg stalemate with Villarreal.
The France international was injured in the first half following a collision with opposition striker Giuseppe Rossi.
Speaking after the match in Spain, Gunners boss Arsene Wenger admitted the signs were not good for the central defender.
"It looks quite serious," he said. "We will have to asses it and I am not a doctor, but the first signs do not look too good."
Captain Cesc Fabregas made only his second appearance since suffering a similar injury back in December during the last eight tie at El Madrigal.
Meanwhile, Wenger confirmed that goalkeeper Manuel Almunia will also be sidelined for three weeks after suffering a recurrence of an ankle problem in the same game.
Full-back Gael Clichy will miss two weeks with a back injury, while strikers Robin van Persie and Eduardo Da Silva will undergo fitness tests ahead of Saturday's Premier League trip to Wigan Athletic.
